CELEBRITY OF THE MONTH
Sir John Murray
175th Birthday (3 March 1841 – 16 March 1914)
Father of modern oceanography

John Murray was born on the 3rd of March, 1841, in Coburg, in Ontario. He was a Scottish Canadian naturalist, oceanographer, marine biologist and limnologist. He is considered to be the father of modern oceanography. In 1868 Murray began collecting marine organisms and making a variety of oceanographic observations during an expedition to the Arctic islands of Jan Mayen and Spitsbergen, off Norway. He presided over the organization of oceanography as a separate science. His most significant personal contribution was the mapping and classification of the sediments on the ocean bottom. He coined the term 'oceanography' to describe the science of the seas. He is also recognized as the founder of the eponymous modern marine science – the study of the earth's oceans and their interlinked ecosystems and chemical and physical processes. His achievements were considerable. He was the first to recognize the existence of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge and of marine or oceanic trenches.

Optimum ship routing for the north Indian Ocean region – a decision support system

Chinmaya Padhy, Debabrata Sen

This paper presents a general approach for the development of a decision support system (DSS) for ship weather routing. With advances in the weather and climate modelling coupled with availability of large computing power, it has become increasingly common to base the route decisions on weather and in particular wave forecasts.

The economic design of the VSS T2 control scheme

Kazemzadeh RB, Faraz A

In this paper, the VSS T2 control chart for monitoring the process mean is economically designed. The cost model proposed by Costa and Rahim (2001) to economically design the variable parameter X control chart is used here and it is minimized through a genetic algorithm (GA) approach.

Identification and assessment of KPIS in cooperative based dairy-food supply chains: a SCOR approach

Pramod Kumar Mishra, Raja Shekhar B J

Measurement of supply chain performance has become inextricably important for any manufacturing or service based firm across industries to keep track of its performance. There are two ways how a supply chain performance can be measured, namely - fact based performance measurement and perception based performance measurement.
